Social Media Week: The Social Media Way

It has been a good feeling, but I also have this lingering feeling that I want to show up in person. And so I am headed to this event in a few hours.

Social Media Week: The Social Media Way

Image representing Livestream as depicted in C...Image via CrunchBaseI just revisited the Social Media Week schedule page to prepare for the events I have said I will go to tomorrow and the rest of the week.

And it's amazing to me how many of the events will be on LiveStream, and each event has its own hashtag. And so I am tempted to stay home for quite a few of the events and consume them from my laptop. Tweeting is so much easier on the laptop.

This event by Sree at Columbia comes to mind.

Social Media Weekend: Columbia Journalism School: Sree Srinivasan

I guess I can "go" to even more events than I was planning to if I go the LiveStream way. Nice.

Social Media Week: Registration Now Open

Does Twitter have limits to how many times you can tweet per hour, per day?

Know Your Limits: How Many Tweets Can You Post Per Day?
How many Tweets can you send Twitter per hour?

1,000 tweets per day, 100 per hour? Twitter blocked me way before that when I was trying to "cover" the Sree event. Maybe it was my rate. If you are tweeting two times a minute, five minutes in a row, the Twitter servers think you are going to end up with 120 tweets for the hour, or something like that.

Of course I am going to show up in person, for at least one event per day. But now I think I am in mind to attend many of the Social Media Week events over LiveStream.

Me: Top Internet Week Influencer?

Wow, there are so many more events since I last checked, like so many, many more.

If it is about absorbing knowledge, the LiveStream way might be the better way. It is you and the speakers, and that's it. But would you be paying a social price because you are not there in person? Some of that can be offset by actively tweeting. You will be found. If you tweet.

But then, it is not like I am not going to show up in person. It is just that all plans I made a few weeks ago about which of the Social Media Week events I will go to are now out the window. I am having to start from scratch.

I am guessing the fact an event is going to be on LiveStream also says to its importance.

Heck, over LiveStream you could be attending events in Miami. Why only New York?

By now I know Social Media Week is primarily going to be a LiveStream and Twitter experience for me. And then I get to make guest/cameo appearances at some select events. I am thinking one per day.

An event that is on LiveStream and has its own hashtag earns major points from me. I am most likely to view those events.

Social Media Week Is Upon Us

There is an email in my inbox this morning. It is from Social Media Week. February 13-17, used to be first week in February. Two years back I was trying to go to as many events as possible. Last years I said I would go to only two or three but ended up going to many more. This year I was thinking I will stick to a few. But now I am in a mood to not fight the urge. Just let it go. This year I might again attempt what I tried two years back: go to as many events as possible.

You start by looking at the schedule and using the Save To Favorites feature. The only guiding light being Event Name.

One Location, Camping Out

These decisions have a tendency to change. I was planning on doing one, then two, then most three events during Social Media Week in February, I ended up doing seven. But for now my decision for Internet Week is to camp out in one location and do as many events as possible in that one location, and to spend more time in the hallways wildly shaking hands than sitting obediently in halls as panelists pontificate.

Monday is my oh so important immigration court date, and that takes priority, and since my hearing is scheduled for 1 PM, and I am meeting my lawyer at 11 to prepare, and court hearings have a tendency to start late and drag on, I have no Internet Week plans until 3 PM Monday, and I am at peace with not even showing up until 4 PM, maybe 5 PM: no soup for you. But once I am done with the court stuff, which might be in the late afternoon, I hope to drop by and inaugurate my Internet Week. I am seeking refugee status, kind of like Einstein.

My Plan For Internet Week

My plan for Internet Week - not set in stone - is to just show up and camp out in that one building and meet as many people as possible. Mind you, I did not say attend as many panels as possible, although one can expect overlap. If people are watching the panels, where you gonna go?

June 6, 7, 8, 9. I am carving out those days.

The Internet Week: The Thing To Do

Social Media Week makes you run around. I don't need to be doing sight seeing in New York City. After taking visiting Nepali dignitaries on citywide tours when doing democracy work for Nepal a few years back, I got to see everything multiple times. Enough. Now get me people.

The Internet Week: The Thing To Do

The Empire State Building.Image via WikipediaI think you show up less to soak up the knowledge and more to meet people. And I just discovered something that makes Internet Week look like a better deal than Social Media Week. For the most part you stick to one location. Get a 15 dollar pass, and stick to one location.

The Internet Week Is Mumbojumbo

Image representing TechStars as depicted in Cr...Image via CrunchBaseI was just at the Internet Week page. There's a lot going on. And looks like you have to pay for each event. It is not like Social Media Week which was mostly free events, or rather all free events.

First of all, there are soooo many events. You can't even browse through all just to get a glimpse.

One good option probably is to buy a pass for 15 dollars but that only covers events at one location for four days, June 6 to June 9.

I guess the arduous process is to go through all the events and be selective and go to a few events. This below is not a list of all events I am going to. These just caught my eye. And I might go to one or two that I might not mange to list today.

You read the lists of events and you realize there is so much knowledge in the blogosphere.

Alexa Is Paperless (1)

I managed to show up on time. I simply ran after I got out of the train. I was on time. I showed up at 2 PM. At first I went into the wrong building. I was supposed to show up at 151, but I walked into 115. The place did not have an elevator, and I am having thoughts of walking up nine flights of stairs. I will definitely be late, I thought. Then I realized I got the house number wrong. I got out quick. And I ran. I showed up. On time.

I took an immediate liking to Alexa's new office. This would be my idea of a great office space. There was this big, open space in the middle. There were work tables. People ended up facing each other, although at some distance. There were unused work spaces. Obviously Alexa had expansion plans.

A Small, Historic EatUp

So around noon I showed up. Oleg was there, his wife was there, his brother was busy serving.

Amy Cao of FoodSpotting showed up. This was not my first time seeing Amy, but this was my first time talking. And we talked at length.

There was this guy. He said he was just passing through town. He was in the city for a few months. He showed up. He said he knew Amy from meeting her at a few events.

So when it was time for the group photo, it is this guy and me, with Amy taking the shot. And I am feeling a little awkward. I hope she got the truck in the background. The truck matters. I am just an eater.

Both the dude and Amy took pictures of my food. My lunch was on the house.

Amy and I first talked on Twitter. Then I saw her briefly at the FoodSpotting panel the first day of Social Media Week, but did not get to talk.
