Facebook's Next Major Breakthrough

SAN FRANCISCO - NOVEMBER 15: Facebook founder...Image by Getty Images via @daylife(Article first published as Facebook's Next Major Breakthrough on Technorati.)

Facebook's next major breakthrough is not going to be some nifty new feature, or yet another higher valuation, but its push for HTML5. It is going to be a major breakthrough for the industry at large when Facebook is not a native app on your smartphone or tablet but rather still a browser experience. That would be Mark Zuckerberg going toe to toe with his icon Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs felt snubbed by Mark when Mark did not play along with some kind of a "social" idea Jobs had for his music offerings. Jobs retaliated by integrating Twitter into his very operating system. Snub to Facebook. Mark retaliated by thumbing HTML5 in Jobs' face.

What's Up With Pictures?

(This post was rejected by Technorati with this comment: It's not news and the only links are to your own blog.)

Image representing Instagram as depicted in Cr...Image via CrunchBasePictures are all the rage, and Instagram deserves much credit. True, Facebook already had billions of pictures before Instagram even showed but with Facebook people thought - with the exception of Fred Wilson - it was a social network rather than a photo sharing site. With Instagram the facade was gone.

There is just something about pictures. The old adage of a picture being worth a thousand words might be true. Something tells me that even after the world might have moved on to gigabit speeds, pictures will still rule. Because a picture is respectful. You know going in that it need not be more than a split second experience. But a 30 second video is a time commitment. And so the picture will hold its ground even as bandwidth goes up. Actually pictures might expand ground. As the bandwidth expands, people might share more and more pictures. Go figure.

Wow Technorati

See that spike in daily income from AdSense? Almost all of it is coming from Technorati on a lazy Sunday from just one article: Microsoft's Second Act?

It is the shortest of the few posts I have done for Technorati so far. And it brought me $12 in just one day. Wow. This is my best one day return on AdSense ever.

Just when my tech startup is taking off in a way that I don't really need to make money from blogging, my blogging is also taking off looks like.

My Post At Technorati Tweeted Out By Google News

Image representing Google News as depicted in ...Image via CrunchBaseThe credit goes to Technorati. Google News does not know who I am. But I just noticed my newest post for Technorati got tweeted out by Google News. That's amazing. Technorati is a Top 30 web property. It is the best thing that has happened for my blogs' traffic.

What was my peak traffic by a wide margin two years back is now not even my floor on a slow day like Saturday. That's amazing. And there is nowhere to go but up. All those links that I send to my blog from my posts at Technorati have been working wonders for traffic to this blog.

Just One More Missing Blog Post

Barackface: The Long March Of Democracy

My only missing blog post now from the Blogger outage of the past two days is not at this blog Netizen but at my other blog Barackface. And I am not worried about it because I already have a copy. It got cross published at Technorati. But I am wondering if it will come back too on its own. It was posted on Wednesday. Something that I posted Thursday had disappeared but is now back. Something else from Wednesday itself is back.

Blogger Is Back We’re very sorry that you’ve been unable to publish to Blogger for the past 20.5 hours. We’re nearly back to normal — you can publish again, and in the coming hours posts and comments that were temporarily removed should be restored. Thank you for your patience while we fix this situation. We use Blogger for our own blogs, so we’ve also felt your pain.

Gonna Write For Technorati

Image representing Technorati as depicted in C...Image via CrunchBaseI got an email from Technorati a few days back saying they want me to write for them. I promptly agreed. This is not a big change to my lifestyle, if any. All they ask is that I first publish a post at their site. After I do that I can go ahead and publish the same at my own blog.

Why did I say yes? Are you kidding me?
  1. There's not going to be additional work for me. I have been an avid blogger on my own. Now I get to cross publish.
  2. This will bring me more visibility.
  3. I get to link to my own blog from my posts at Technorati. That is going to jack up the traffic at my personal blog. This just might be the number one reason to do it.
  4. Technorati is a Top 30 property on the web. I am okay being associated with their name.
  5. They asked for my Google AdSense ID. They will run ads on my behalf to go with my posts. So I guess there might be some money too. I am not complaining.

The Kevin Marks Departure

First Facebook stole the buzz from Google. Well, before that Google stole the buzz from Microsoft. Then Twitter stole the buzz from Facebook. And now Google is back on the bleeding edge with Google Wave. But Google Wave was created by a small team inside Google. That t

eam acted like a startup. And I think it is marvelous that Google Corporate nurtured that team and incubated Google Wave. But one persistent question will remain. At what point does Google become a Microsoft, an IBM, still big but no longer on the bleeding edge? One way to know Google has become big and old is that people with the newest and boldest ideas start leaving. I don't think that has happened to Google yet, but you can see some early signs.

Engineering leader Kevin Marks leaves Google for the social web VentureBeat
Google's OpenSocial Evangelist Leaves Google GigaOm Kevin Marks, one of the leading voices on Google-backed OpenSocial and Friend Connect, has left the Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine, he announced on his blog. ..... Google might have lost one of its most visible evangelists ...... Kevin, who in the past worked at Technorati, is one of the smartest guys I have met ....... I wonder if it has something to do with Google’s inability to totally grok the social web. ;-) OpenSocial was launched with much fanfare but seems to be lagging behind Facebook and its Facebook Connect effort.
A Social Force Departs Google TechCrunch Marks says he is working on a bunch of things “related to the social Web” and “activity streams” ...... Asked why he is leaving Google, he responds that his work is pretty much completed: “Over the last two years, we have built out the infrastructure for the social Web. Now it is time to build things on that infrastructure.” ..... is ready to work in a smaller company ..... The action, anyway, is moving to real time activity streams and Marks now seems to be pointed in that direction.
Farewell to Google My first taste of Google was to work on orkut, before starting the project now known as Google Profiles ....... Realising that Google had thousands of engineers, but very few comfortable speaking in public, I became a Developer Advocate, working to bridge external and internal developers, explaining the Social web to Google and OpenSocial and more to the wider web community. ......... build social infrastructure to make the web more social. ...... I'll be coding, writing and speaking on the social web via several new projects ..... If you want to get hold of me, I'm kevinmarks on most social networks, domains and of course Twitter. Or just google me.

Taking The Number 2 Spot On Google Search For Donut Android

Hitting Number 4 For Google Search Results on Cupcake Android
Donut Android: Windows 95, Android 2009?
Cupcake Android Delay Reason: Donut Android
Google Analytics Says I Am Paul Krugman Friend, Cupcake Android Expert
Cupcake: Android 1.5
David Gelernter: Manifesto

What can I say? There is only one site above mine. Which means, for this one particular niche, for now, I beat the following:
And to think Android is set to have a big buzz for the rest of this year. Feels to me like this blog is about to ride a wave. Give me some traffic, Donut!
