Apple Is All Over The News

Apple seems to feel about the mobile space like Microsoft used to feel about the PC space. Before Bill Gates retired he had threatened to eat up anti-virus services like Norton. During the span of Bill Gates' career numerous companies got eaten up. It was like the Sun would expand and eat up Mercury, and then it would expand some more and eat up Venus. Apple seems to be doing something similar.

In capitalism though, it is about the consumer. I am not an Apple person, so this does not affect me much.

I have had my cloud a long time. It's called the browser.

Apple just pissed off:

Dropbox,
Sparrow,
Instapaper,
Readability,
Remember the Milk,
Facebook,
RIM, &
the carriers.

Well done.less than a minute ago via Twitter for Mac Favorite Retweet Reply

New York Times: Which Apps Are Threatened by Apple’s Upgrades?: How do you know if you’ve created a really great, useful iPhone app? Apple tries to put you out of business. ...... a number of new features for Apple’s operating systems that it announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference have been available through existing apps and services for some time. Some of those apps are quite popular, and have been lucrative for the people who developed them .... If you are really good at what you do, you will be assimilated.

Marco: What Safari’s Reading List means for Instapaper: Only the timing is news today, not these features’ existence...... If Apple gets a bunch of Safari users — the browser that works best with Instapaper — to get into a “read later” workflow and see the value in such features, those users are prime potential Instapaper customers. And it gives me an easier way to explain it to them: “It’s like Safari’s Reading List, but better, in these ways.” ...... Today, fewer than 1% of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch owners are Instapaper customers, despite Instapaper spending a lot of time (including today) at the #1-paid-app spot in the App Store’s News category for both iPhone and iPad. The potential market is massive, but most people don’t know that they need it yet....... a portion of those people will be interested in upgrading to a dedicated, deluxe app and service to serve their needs better. And they’ll quickly find Instapaper in the App Store.

New York Times: Apple Sounds the PC Death Knell: “We are going to demote the PC to just be a device. We are going to move the digital hub, the center of your digital life, into the cloud,” Mr. Jobs said. ..... Once these new services begin later this fall, people who buy an iOS device can fully get by without a computer. They will no longer need to plug an iOS device into a PC to activate it; iCloud will automatically sync and backup people’s photos, music and documents. All software will be updated over the Internet.

TechCrunch: Watch Out Facebook Connect, Apple Pushes Twitter Sign-Ins In iOS 5: Apple iOS 5 is using Twitter oAuth, which is going to give Twitter a huge push as a sign-in system. One sign-in system that Apple noticeably did not integrate with is Facebook Connect. This is a huge win for Twitter sign-on over Facebook Connect as a defacto social log-in.

Apple: New Version of iOS Includes Notification Center, iMessage, Newsstand, Twitter Integration Among 200 New Features: Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption; iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS devices; and Newsstand, a new way to purchase and organize your newspaper and magazine subscriptions ...... 1,500 new APIs ..... With iOS 5 and iCloud®, you just enter your Apple ID and password and iCloud will seamlessly integrate with your apps to automatically and wirelessly keep all of your mail, contacts, calendars, photos, apps, books, music and more, up-to-date across all your devices without ever having to connect to a computer.
